square four fountains - Quattro Fontane
Made in Baroque style, it’s also called “Four Fountains” because of the four columns at the corners of the central basin, which have on the top sea horses which let the water run into the tanks below. The central part consists of two basins above which stands the statue depicting the symbol of the city: the Centauressa. The biped centaur with woman’s bust has a crown in his head and holds a sceptre in his right hand and a globe in the left hand, both symbols of power. The fountain was built in 1635 according to the will of the administrators of that time, whose names are carved on the edge of the basin: Vincenzo Cacopardo, Cesare Cipolla, Vincenzo Spuches, Geronimo Mena.
